Task/Constraints

Redesign the Data Analyst page on the Eclipse Soundscapes (ES) website while adhering to client constraints, which include:

1. The site is built on WordPress
2. The client prefers minimal use of plugins
3. The survey platform will remain on Google Forms

Project Overview

The Eclipse Soundscapes (ES) Project, funded by NASA Science Activation, is a Citizen Science initiative that investigates how solar eclipses affect life on Earth. The project depends on public involvement in various roles, one of which is the Data Analyst. My team recently redesigned the Data Analyst page to improve clarity, streamline the user journey for participation, and enhance accessibility.

Building on these improvements, we now aim to address the challenge:

How can we simplify the "Analyze 2023 Data" section to help users better understand the role of a Data Analyst while ensuring it is accessible to visually impaired individuals through screen readers?

Proto Personas

Competitive Analysis

Our redesign prioritizes improving accessibility and crafting a streamlined user experience that is intuitive and engaging.

Initial User Testing

We conducted interviews with 10 participants aged 18-25 to evaluate the current site layout, assessing their understanding of the Data Analyst position and their ability to engage with the surveys.

We pulled a few quotes from users that highlight the site's pain points:

“Site is too text heavy”"Why is the back button on the right side? That’s weird”“I have no idea where the survey link is”
"The text is unusually wide"“I am overwhelmed and confused with navigating throughout the page”“I know what a data analyst does, but not for the case of the ES project.”

Prioritization Matrix

We developed low-fidelity prototypes that integrated essential features like the header and survey link.

Reflections

As a team, we presented our case study to the client and they were impressed by our thoughtful solutions, connecting both client and user needs. In a one month period, we were able to test different iterations and create a streamlined intuitive user flow.
